The NCAA early signing period is a short window during which student-athletes can officially commit to U.S. colleges by signing an agreement. For Canadian athletes, this opportunity can help lock in a spot on a team and secure athletic aid before the regular signing rush begins.
As of Fall 2024, NCAA Division I programs are no longer using the National Letter of Intent (NLI). Instead, athletes will sign Athletic Financial Aid Agreements or school-issued offers. For NCAA Division II, the NLI is still in place.
What Is the NCAA Early Signing Period?
The early signing period is when student-athletes can officially commit to a school and stop being recruited by others. While the NLI was traditionally the tool for this, Division I now uses other formal agreements. These are still binding once signed and typically include a scholarship commitment.
For Canadian athletes, this moment provides a clear answer to “What’s next?” It gives families time to plan, complete visa paperwork, and focus on academic and athletic readiness without the uncertainty of late offers.
Why the NCAA Early Signing Period Matters for Canadian Athletes
While American athletes often sign early, Canadian athletes are sometimes unsure of the timeline. Signing early helps Canadians:
Stay ahead of U.S. roster planning
Finalize documentation for F-1 student visas
Eliminate travel or academic stress near graduation
Lock in athletic aid while it's still available

2025–2026 NCAA Early Signing Dates
Here are the confirmed NCAA early signing periods:
DI Basketball (Early Period): November 12–19, 2025
DI Football (Early Period): December 4–6, 2025
All Other DI & DII Sports: November 13, 2024 – August 1, 2025
DII Basketball and Football: Follow NLI-based schedules
Always confirm with your coach which system (NLI or financial aid agreement) is used and when.
What Canadian Athletes Sign Instead of an NLI
As of October 2024:
Division I schools are phasing out the NLI
Athletes now sign Athletic Financial Aid Agreements
These still:
Lock in a scholarship (if offered)
Bind the athlete to that school
Stop other schools from recruiting
For Division II schools, the NLI system is still in effect, and athletes will follow the traditional signing steps.
Ask your coach: “Will I be signing an NLI or another agreement?”

Eligibility Still Matters After Signing
Signing early whether through an NLI or a financial aid agreement does not guarantee that you’ll get to compete. You must still:
Finish your 16 NCAA core courses
Meet minimum GPA requirements (2.3 for D1, 2.2 for D2)
Be cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center
Maintain amateur status
Use our Core Course Tracker to make sure your Canadian high school courses count.
What If You Change Your Mind After Signing?
For D2 (NLI): You’ll need a release from the school. If denied, you may lose a year of eligibility.
For D1 (Financial Aid Agreement): These are also binding. Backing out may result in losing your scholarship or being ineligible to compete elsewhere.
Bottom line: Only sign if you are absolutely sure about the school, coach, and academic program.
Signing from Canada: What to Know
You don’t need to fly to the U.S. or attend a ceremony. Most Canadians sign electronically or through a scanned PDF submitted by email. Some do it at school with a coach or guidance counselor present.
Personal Story: Colin’s Signing Decision
My son Colin was being recruited as a goalkeeper in the NCAA. While his teammates celebrated early signings in November, Colin waited. He had great offers, but he wasn’t sure. He signed later that spring, and it worked out but those months were full of uncertainty.
For Canadian families, an early signing is a huge relief if you’re ready. If not, don’t rush it.
